It doesn’t have to be a life sentence.” – Peter Levine Recent advances in neuroscience and new discoveries in the emerging field of resilience and post-traumatic growth have shown how the brain’s innate neuroplasticity can be utilised to modify coping behaviours, even when these appear to be seemingly stuck or intractable. At this online webinar with Linda Graham, we consider neuroscientific evidence and focus on the ways in which our clients can harness their brain’s processes to rewire their defensive / dysfunctional coping strategies. Fundamental to a resilience based therapeutic approach is an understanding that clients can learn and grow from meeting the challenges and adversities of the human condition, when they have the support, resources and skills to do so. To this end, Linda draws on practices of mindfulness, self-compassion, empathy and forgiveness; to demonstrate how we can help shift the functioning of the brain out of contraction and reactivity into more receptivity, openness and the larger perspective. She focusses on resilience-based coping with trials, tragedies and trauma, to show how we can learn to: Use body-based tools to return the body-brain to its natural physiological baseline of calm and safety Utilise the theory of mind to manage powerful surges of fear, anger, guilt and shame Cultivate reliable refuges and resources within one’s self and with other people Participants will learn to apply these practices to five factors that predict genuine post-traumatic growth: Acceptance of reality (and the consequences of what happened) Resourcing with family, friends and community Recognising the positive in the midst of the difficult; finding the gifts in the mistakes Writing a coherent narrative of the event within a larger life story Appreciating the new life that emerges because of the difficulties, not just in spite of them About the speaker Linda Graham is an experienced psychotherapist in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is the author of The Resilience Handbook: Powerful Practices to Bounce Back from Disappointment, Difficulty, even Disaster (New World Library) and Bouncing Back: Rewiring Your Brain for Maximum Resilience and Well-Being, winner of the 2013 Books for a Better Life award and the 2014 Better Books for a Better World award. She integrates modern neuroscience, mindfulness practices, and relational psychology in her international trainings on resilience and well-being.
